History of Coleman
W. C. Coleman started his company in the early 1900’s by making gas lanterns in Witchita, Kansas. Not only did he provide light at a local football game, but his invention allowed farmers to work in the dark. In the 30’s, Mr. Coleman was making gas furnaces and space heaters while a Canadian plant was opened. During WWII, he was commissioned by the military to manufacture a portable cook stove that was light, convenient and could run on a number of fuel sources. After the war, the stoves became increasingly popular for camping. By 1957 an insulated food cooler was developed and the product line kept growing. Coleman now has plants in the US, Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, Mexico and Venezuela.

When looking into buying a canvas tent, the size and style are two aspects you want to consider. These tents tend to be on the larger side. The basic style is the straight wall style, but there are also canvas tents available for purchase made in the flex bow style. These tents may or may not have awnings. The sizes range from 9 by 10 inch, 9 by 12 inch, 10 by 14 inch and 10 by 16 inch tents. These tents can sleep anywhere from six to nine people.
One of the great things about canvas tents is their durability. Canvas tents are made for backcountry camping so they tend to be more sturdy and weather-resistant than other tents. Canvas tents are great for retaining heat on cold nights. So, in the event you and your camping party gets caught out in the rain, you’ll have a nice warm place to go to to dry out and warm up. These tents are treated with fire retardant for safety and are made with water-repellant fabric. They also have sturdy vinyl floors. Some of the features include rain flaps and bungee loops on the side poles to help the tent stay up in heavy rain, snow, and fierce winds. The metal parts on these tents are treated to prevent rust from forming. These tents also have no-see-um mesh in the windows and doors to keep out even tiny insects. Many of these tents come with rain flys to protect from the elements, but some of the more old-fashioned tents will require you to buy these items separately, so bear this in mind. Some of the companies that make canvas tents are Trek and Kodiak.
In general, canvas tents are a little bit more difficult to set up because they are heavier than the tents made from polyester. Usually two people are required at a minimum to set the tent up, but the Kodiak flex bow tent requires only one to set up. Some of the newer canvas tents come with chain-linked poles for an easier setup.
There are some basic safety precautions you should take when camping in a canvas tent. Because of the tent’s heavier fabric, it’s important to put them up properly because if they collapse on top of anyone inside, they might not be able to get out from under it easily. It is possible for people to suffocate if this happens if there is poor ventilation in the tent. Be sure that you read the instructions carefully and have the appropriate number of people required putting the tent up. In general, before going camping, try setting up your tent in your backyard first, so you have an idea of how it should be done when you get to your campsite. Pack extra tent poles in case one of your poles breaks, and lay down a tarp on your campsite to protect the bottom of your tent. If you follow these instructions you will have a great time camping in your canvas tent.

Camping can be a fun, inexpensive way to gather the family together and get away. A quality family tent will ensure many successful family outings where kids and grown-ups alike can stay out of the elements and rest well after a hard day of play.
Big Agnes, REI, The North Face, Kelty, and Coleman offer family tents that sleep four to eight adults. Many family tents, while designed for base camping, pack neatly into a portable pouch and are made with lightweight aluminum poles. Many lightweight tents come in at well under 20 pounds. Color-coded poles, grommet webbing, plastic clips , and easy-to-follow instructions allow even novice campers to get tents up quickly.
Look for tents made with waterproof fabrics, taped seams, awnings, and generous rainflys to keep you and your belongings dry in even the wettest weather. Roll up rainflys, lots of mesh paneling, and skylights will increase air circulation and minimize interior condensation. You’ll also enjoy more bright sunlight and glowing moonlight.
Interior mesh storage pockets will give you the space you need to stash your stuff. Some designs offer room dividers that offer everyone some privacy and can minimize the disruptions caused by varying sleep and wake-up times.
As homey as it may be, always remember to keep food out of the tent lest you attract some unwanted animal guests. Store food and any clothing or gear that smells like food away from your tent. And be sure to set up in area that’s level and free from debris or objects that could damage the floor of your tent.
