Last Updated on October 26, 2020

Coleman is a brand that every hiker or camper trusts. Coleman builds tents, a stove, and everything related to camping gears. The brand is well over 120 years old and their legacy gets reflected in their products. It is one of the best brands out there when it comes to superior quality of tents. There are many reasons why one should go for a Coleman tent like; reliability, durability, price, and wide range of variety.

For a first timer in camping, it must be very confusing for which tent to go for (there are so many to choose from!). Even when only talking about Coleman tents, there are so many options that you can roll over the things. Therefore, we at Gones Camping have made a list specifically on Coleman tents. We have picked the top tent from each category, such as; family camping tents, backpacking tents, blackout tent, dome tent and more.

7 Best Coleman Tents

All the tents we have picked are best in their specific category. These tents stand out more than any other. We took the tents for a trip and tried to conclude as many features as we could. Here are our final verdicts.
Looking for some other brand? Don’t worry we have also included a buyer’s guide in the end. Be sure to read that too.

Coleman Hooligan Backpacking Tent

Backpacking Tent

The Hooligan tops the list because of the value that it provides with such less price tag. These tents start from around $56 and go up to $129 depending on the size you order. There are three sizes available; 2-person, 3-person, 4-person. All these tents come in three varied colors, Gold, Orange and Red. It is the best Coleman you can find for backpacking.

Talking about the features- there are plenty. The material is made from high quality polyester exclusively made in the USA. Most of the part of the tent is covered with a mesh which doubles as windows as well as screen for mosquitos. The interior in the smallest one is a 7*8 feet floor area which can fit 3 camp pads. It weighs around 12 pounds which is very impressive considering it can fit 3 persons easily.

There is a zipper type enclosure for the doors, while it is a fully covered vestibule type tent. The poles are made up of fiberglass (which is quite expected). Also the rain fly can cover the tent fully, and it does its job very well.

What did we like about the tent?

Honestly, we think this is the best tent you can buy even if you consider some of the pricier tents. It is a total win-win situation, you get everything you would ever need while camping. We like the fact that they have made this tent so light and easy to pack. The sizing is also decent, which can easily fit 3 persons and their gears.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

Although it is the best in class, it is not that good at waterproofing from the underside that is the floor.

Best For: Hiker’s

Coleman Tent- The Blackout

Blackout Tent

Did you ever feel like your tent should block more of the sunlight? And if you want the best tent for blocking 99% of daylight then your search ends here. The Blackout tent from the brand is the best in class. It has a price tag of $161 for which you can fit 4 persons at a time.

Tent easily fits a bedroom and leaves some space for the gears, as the floor size is 26m2. It merely just seeps into the family tents category as it is a big tent. As the tent blocks out 99% of the sun’s light, it also helps to keep inside 5°cooler than outside. This is a very light weight tent with sturdy poles made of fiberglass. The pitching is also easy considering it is a family size tent.

We tested this tent in a windy area, where it performed very well and kept hold of the ground. The best part of the tent is that it has a separate storage area or porch. This porch is divided from the bedroom with the help of a secondary door. The main door is a zipper type while the windows are PVC covered, that allow the slightest of sunlight for a perfect balance. It is a100% waterproof tent which is rated for being SPF 50 protection against the sun (a feature not present in many tents).

What did we like about the tent?

We loved the fact that it can block 99% of sunlight while keeping the inside cooler. This also means that it is a very good tent at waterproofing. The presence of the porch is the cherry on the top of the cake.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

Apart from having a really good sized floor, the height is not that good. It is only 130 cm, which is quite a shame.

Best for: Privacy Outings

Coleman Cabin Tent

Tent with Instant Setup

This series of tents from Coleman comprises three tents; 4, 6 and 10 person. Again it is a big family tent with sunlight block technology. Although it only blocks 90% sunlight but considering the size, we looked past that. Its price tag on this one starts from $129 to $265. We laid our hands on the biggest one i.e.10-person tent. Here’s our verdict.

The dark room technology blocks around 90% of the sunlight so that your family can sleep past the sunrise. Being a big tent with plenty of ventilation, it does keep the inside cooler than the surroundings. Note that it is a weatherproof tent and not a full-fledged waterproof tent. So, don’t expect much on the waterproofing front. Also the setup time is less than 2 minutes, which we found very helpful, tent pitches kind of itself.

The dimensions are: 14*10*6.6 feet; you can easily fit 4 queen sized air bedrooms inside. There’s also a room divider for added privacy if needed. Doors are zipper type and windows do have a mesh screen. The materials are high quality polyester with reflective guy lines. A rainfly is included in the package which can help to keep you safe from light rain showers. Being a tent, it weighs around 42 pounds (which is a lot!) hence not so ideal for backpacking (of course) but good for long car trips with family or friends.

What we liked about the tent?

It is the best tent you can buy for family camping while also blocking the sunlight. The corners are welded and seams are inverted that keeps some of the water out.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

For such a big tent there must be some vents provided, but we found no vent. The windows are not so good at ventilation.

Best for: Camping with Family in any condition

Coleman 8-Person Tent Instant Tent

8 Person Tent

As the name suggests, this is an instant setup tent. It comes with poles that are pre-attached to the poles, you just have to extend the poles and click them in their place. This tent starts from $216 and is available in black, brown and blue shades.

Talking about the features; it is made of 150D polyester material that provides good protection against water/rain. A very spacious tent with capability of holding 2 queen sized bedrooms at once. The WeatherTec system is patented by the brand with welded floors and inverted seams. There are 6 windows which keep the tent well ventilated while the door is a zipper. The windows also are mesh type to keep the mosquitoes and bugs out.

Dimension of the floor are; 14*10*6.6 feet, this is the smallest of all the 8-person tents out there. It makes it great for packing and carrying. They sell it as a 3-season tent as you take it out in winters. The whole package weighs 42 pounds.

What did we like about the tent?

The unique selling point of this tent is its instant setup capabilities. Anyone with a basic knowledge of tents can pitch easily. We also like the fact that the poles are made from durable steel rather than aluminum or fiberglass.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

Although it is a lightweight tent, this also eats on the fact that only 7 people can fit in comfortably. The 8th person will find it hard to fit in.

Best for: Instant setup.

Coleman Tent Octagon

Waterproof Family Camping Tent 1

This is not a traditional family tent, it is shaped like an octagon for the best use of space. The tent features a XXL bedroom with sunlight blocking capabilities. It can block 99% of the sunlight and also keep the interior 5° cooler than the surroundings. All this doesn’t come cheap; this is the most expensive on the list (hence on the 5th place). It is priced at whooping $338 considering it can fit 8 persons. But there are many more features too that you won’t get on others.

The tent is made from a material which is 4500mm HH waterproof and combined with taped seams, this is the tent you would want. Being a family tent you can find enhanced size; 4*4*2 meters; featuring the best headroom in its class. There is much more to talk about, like the poles are made from steel, you get a wheeled carry bag, base made from polyethylene, and six windows that provide world class ventilation. There are two doors that open like the real ones and also the headroom is even throughout.

What did we like about the tent?

This is the most feature loaded tent with everything you can think of. From best waterproofing to headroom to a XXL bedroom sized room, it packs everything that you need for your family camping trip.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

Although the best you can buy, it is an expensive tent. Until you are very much into family camping, you shouldn’t consider buying this.

Best for: Luxury Camping.

Coleman Sundome Tent

Sundome Tent

This is the most popular choice amongst single hikers and campers. You can find over 20,000 reviews online on this tent. It is available in four sizes ranging from 2 persons to 4 persons tent. The price range is $55 to $219 with only two color options i.e. green and blue. It is a very light tent weighing only 6.38 pounds which makes it even more lovable.

The materials used are not the best but do their job quite well. Walls are made from Polyester taffeta 75 denier fly sheets. And the seams are welded with inverted constructions which easily keep the water out. As it is a dome construction, you can’t expect much of headroom. There are ground vents and large windows for excellent ventilation.

Talking about the size, it is a 7*5*4 cubic feet tent; not very roomy but best for single hikers. It can fit 1 queen sized bedroom. The door is a zip closure type which is easily accessible. E-port makes it very easy to route the electrical wires.

What did we like about the tent?

The most time tested tent, go for it eyes closed. Provides good waterproofing, shelter and capable of 4-seasoning. Can withstand winds upto 35+ mph in speed.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

Although a very good option, the tent could have had more headroom.

Best for: Single Hikers/campers

Coleman WeatherMaster 10-Person Outdoor Tent

10 Person Outdoor Tent

Yet another family camping tent topping the list, the WeatherMaster is a 10-person tent made into a cabin like structure. This tent costs $225 with all the accessories included. It is the tent you would wish to go in any weather condition. Here’s our verdict.

The materials used are decent and easily hold up the structure of the tent considering the size. It is a cabin-type of tent that means you will never have to cringe for the headroom. The Coleman patented WeatherTech system makes it stand in every weather condition. The doors are zipper type with hinges; just like real doors. There is also a divider in between in case you need privacy.

Dimensions are; 17*9*6.8 feet, which is very roomy. The rainfly covers the half way through the walls and provides waterproofing. And of course the poles are made from steel.

What did we like about the tent?

It is a roomy tent, which is very much desirable while camping with family. The tent can hold up against any weather condition. We also found that this is a lightweight tent compared to its competitors.

What we didn’t like about the tent?

The rainfly only extends halfway to the walls, which is not good for water sealing while rain.

Best for: Countryside Family Trips
