Oklahoma City National Memorial

I’m now in Tennessee, but two states ago I visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial that remembers the 168 people (including 19 children) who died in the 1995 bombing.

It was a gray day, perfect for the somber mood of the place. Each chair represents one person (notice the smaller chairs in the middle for the children). I had a hard time not crying.

P.S. Wi-fi has been spotty, but if you want a more regular Gone Scamping fix, I’m posting daily over on Facebook.

  1. Empty chairs. How symbolic. Is that snow?

    • Bob,

Yes – it was beautifully done. Nope, not snow, just dead grass. The symbolism was thick that day.

  2. I was there several years ago and thought the memorial was well-done. Poignant.

  3. I have been there. wept and wept. Its simplicity and starkness is stunning. Glad you were able to visit.

  4. Your photo is beautiful AND haunting. I think you captured a great deal of emotion in that one click of the shutter…on a lighter note, I believe June might be one of the loveliest times to visit Minnesota, especially Minneapolis. It might be a bit colder up in the Boundary Waters National Park area. The later in June that you arrive, the better chance of avoiding ticks and other nasty jiggers. Please, please, please get in touch when you come!

    • Manisha,

I appreciate the kind words, thank you. MN in June is a definite possibility, and I’d love to meet up if I make it there!
