Bisbee, Arizona is an old mining town, though now it’s more of an artist colony. Galleries, coffee shops, brew pubs, and funky little stores line the streets, while renovated miner shacks crawl up the hill from downtown. (Which is tiny – you can cover Bisbee in a day, and you should. It’s a charmer.)
Everything seems to be brightly painted or artistically rendered, and I fell in love with this entryway to someone’s house.
I’d like two angels welcoming me home every day, wouldn’t you? Though after a long night at the pub I might come home and be scared to death, thinking they weren’t welcoming me but were in fact about to swoop down and carry me off to their evil-winged-creature lair, and I’d die of fright, only to be found the next day lying next to the Dead End sign, by someone walking their dog, and the person – after calling 911, this person is no savage – would nod and give a sad smile, saying to the dog, See, Bowser? See the irony?
Bowser would give my corpse a respectful sniff as if to say, Yes. Yes, I see it. Now, give me a cookie.

HA! That is one of my favorite spots to photograph! We live about twenty miles from Bisbee and take frequent day trips there just to photograph – always something new. I think I like the gate marginally better than the angels, although they are all entrancing.

Judie,
Bisbee is such a great town – lucky you to live so near. That gate *is* gorgeous, and didn’t terrorize me the way the way the angels did. Ha.

I know the guy who did the angels as well as a lot of the other iron art around town.
Nice thing about collapsing on the ground in Bisbee is someone will come along and take care of you. A good place. Quirky. But good.

Emilie,
Quirky but good is my favorite kind of place. Nice that you know the sculptor!

Hi Deonne,
What a lovely place to plan to visit. Until now, I had never heard of Bisbee. Looks like by continuing to follow you I’ll have a wonderful list of must-see sites.
Thanks.

Its so hard not to psychoanalyze. So I am going to step over you on the dead end street and cloely examine the Evil-Winged-Creature. Nope, I don’t see it. Angels are not evil winged creatures, now exactly just how much Tequila or mescoline have you had today. Angels don’t live in a lair, I’m sure of that, just ask sam, he’s sure he lives with an angel in an RV. So tuck your wings back up under your sweater, and redirect your drama.
As far a the gate goes and the aesthetic, one must contend that the artistic use of Negative positive space is ambiguous, which is which, the opening defining the dark space is in the gate is beckoning and the solid metal structure of the gate defining the light is repellent which is generally seen as the positive space. Maybe this is how you ended up on the dead end street.
The appeal is, it must be cloud nine where you end up when you go inside. Not Heaven just a portal to rest, relaxation, and elation, because you get to meet the Artist. I live right next to a metal sculpture artist, David Jacobs, and the truly are the coolest people and all about Karma. So you take back what you said about lairs and wickedness.
Rob,
You haven’t been in my head after too much tequila but okay – angels aren’t evil. And thank you in advance for stepping over my dead body instead of giving it a little kick.

Did you try the “Killer Bee Honey?” Oh, so good…so many flavors. I’m heading to that area next week.

We love to hike Bisbee… it’s funk is sooo chiming and photogenic. And the steep streets and stairs are a good workout. So much rust, so little time…
