Love and Sweetness in Vega, TX

When I had lunch in Adrian, TX, the waitress told me to go to Vega, a slightly bigger town east on Route 66, and visit Dot’s Mini Museum (105 N. 12th St.). She had me at Dot, then you throw in mini and the cuteness is too much to ignore. So I went.

I expected to make a donation or at least meet someone inside, but nope, you just walk in and look around at your leisure. (There was a truck parked at the house next to the museum, so I assume someone was watching to make sure I didn’t rob the place.) The brochure says Dot is dead now, but her daughters, Betty and Bonnie, curate the collection. And what a collection it is. You’re greeted by this guy:

Howdy.

Here’s the exterior:

The horse on the left is either talking or about to bite. Both are alarming.

Not only were there fun things to look at:

Though the thought of the dusting involved made me want to take a nap.

And covet:

Want.

Buck Owens on vinyl? WANT.

But the fact that this woman’s memory is kept alive by her daughters in a tiny room in a tiny town on a side road you’d never find just driving through makes me want to weep. In the sweetest way.

I’m not much of a collector – clutter gives me hives – but I can only hope that after I’m gone someone will remember me with as much love and respect.

Adios.

Okay, I’m getting weepy again. Kiss your loved ones, and have a great weekend.

What a sweet way to finish out the week. I love stuff like this!

  3. cruzin2some – It *was* neat, I agree.

Deborah – Oh good. I figured you needed some sweetness after all the depressing comedy and panhandle insanity.

  4. Hey Deonne! I came across your blog from the RV Travelers website, and was immediately hooked! I started from #1, and am current, jonesing for the next update!

My wife and I full timed RV’d for 3 yrs, traveling/working our way up from my home state of FL to ME, and back, and spent many a happy night on the road, seldom staying in campgrounds, unless we were workamping (www.workamping.com) for fuel/food income. My inspiration to travel began with Steinbeck’s “Travels With Charley”, then William Least Heat Moon’s “Blue Highways”.

I wish you well, and look forward to your next communication!

  5. Deonne,

Thanks so much for the link to Catalog Living. I have spent the last 1/2 hour laughing so hard my stomach hurts! For that, I must thank you.

I hope you are enjoying your offbeat adventures as much as we enjoy reading them!

  6. Brad – Welcome, and thanks for the kind words! Those books are classics, and I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t read them. But now that you’ve reminded me, I’m putting them on the top of my list. Done.

Kimbopolo – Isn’t that a great site? (For readers who don’t know, it’s http://catalogliving.net/.) I *am* enjoying my adventures, thanks, and am already plotting some big ones for next year.
